Both work. A controller with low deadzone is competitive on most circuit servers, especially shorter tracks where consistency matters more than raw pace. A wheel pulls ahead on long endurance races and on servers running custom realistic handling configs. If you don't already own a wheel, don't buy one for casual league racing - get good on a controller first.
What ping you need for competitive racing
Under 80ms is the standard for league racing. Above 100ms you'll start losing wheel-to-wheel battles you should win - the desync becomes visible in close racing. Pick a server in your region first, then look at the league quality second. A great league with 130ms ping is worse than a decent league with 30ms.
